The Kiwis were pounded and put through the ringer in a 14-12 win over Samoa in Whangarei last Saturday. They trailed for most of the game but a Shaun Kenny-Dowall try in the corner sealed the win with a couple of minutes left on the clock.

England were unlucky in a 16-12 loss to the Kangaroos in Melbourne on Sunday. The Poms held a lead with 20 minutes left, but Ben Hunt was brilliant off the bench for Australia. A controversial last minute TMO decision when Ryan Hall looked to have got a finger to the ball in goal consigned England to a loss.  

Last time they met 

At Wembley last year in the Rugby League World Cup semi-final – and it was one of the best games of international rugby league ever.  

England had a lead with seconds remaining, but Shaun Johnson stepped through some tiring defense to level the scores. His conversion after the siren sent the Kiwis to the final.  

What you need to know 

Interesting game this one. You ready? Ok. 

If the Kiwis win or draw, they’re into the Four Nations final. If New Zealand loses by 10 or more, England leapfrog them on the table and the Kiwis will rely on Samoa stopping Australia clawing back the points differential (currently NZ is +20 and Australia is -14). 

England needs to win to make the final, pure and simple. But even if they only win by a narrow margin, a big Australia win over Samoa could see the English miss out.  

If England loses to New Zealand, they’ll be praying for Samoa to narrowly beat Australia to get a spot in the final in Wellington next week. 

Hooker Issac Luke and winger Manu Vatuvei returned to the Kiwis side last week. Kieran Foran took a heavy hit to his ribs and stayed keeled over on the turf for a while but is a tough bugger. We’re sure he’ll play this weekend. 

Reasons to watch 

Like the All Blacks-England match later in the night, it’s gonna be a humdinger. England were desperately unlucky last week, will still feel the semi-final loss and are intent on making the final.  

Are rare rugby league match in Dunedin should be well attended by both sets of fans.  

Reasons to turn away 

The Kiwis were off the pace against Samoa. If they aren’t ready and firing, they could easily lose by more than 10 and see a once sure finals berth slip away.  

Final instructions 

This match could go anywhere. Both sides were pushed by Samoa while New Zealand played out of their skins to beat Australia. The English could’ve done the same thing to the Roos last weekend but couldn’t maintain the rage for 80 minutes. 

Both sets of forwards are big. And scary. Both sides have world class wingers in Hall and Vatuvei. Both have halves combinations with grittiness, flair and NRL premierships (Gareth Widdop and Kieran Foran). Both fullbacks are creative and explosive.

Race Preview

The Japanese galloper Admire Rakti burst into Melbourne Cup favoritism after a stunning win in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18. The Caulfield Cup has always been one of the key lead ups to this. The seven-year-old circled the field after racing wide before going on to score from Rising Romance and Lucia Valentina.

Admire Rakti looks to be hard to beat on that effort but carries topweight of 58.5kg and will have to defy history as no horse has won carrying as much since Think Big in 1975.

The logical danger to Admire Rakti appears to be Lucia Valentina. The four-year-old mare has some great lead up from for this and had to make her run in the Caulfield Cup from a mile back.

Her effort to charge home for 3rd was brilliant and she carries just 53kg. The Kris Lees galloper should be suited by the Flemington track having taken out the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at her start prior to the Caulfield Cup.

Nine other gallopers come out of the Caulfield Cup including the Peter Moody-trained pair of Brambles and Lidari who finished 4th and 6th and were split by Araldo who came 5th. All have rough chances.

Other notable runs at Caulfield came from Junoob who was unlucky and Who Shot Thebarman who didn’t handle the track but loves Flemington.

Other key lead ups to the Melbourne Cup in recent years have been the Cox Plate and Lexus Stakes. The Cox Plate has provided the past two winners to the Melbourne Cup with both Fiorente and the Robert Hickmott-trained Green Moon coming out of the Plate.

Hickmott has a leading contender Fawkner in the race this year. The seven-year-old was 2nd at Moonee Valley behind Adelaide and is a great chance to win the Melbourne Cup. He ran a huge race in the event last year finishing 6th after getting a mile back and with the right run he will go very close.

The Darren Weir-trained Signoff was an impressive winner of the Lexus Stakes (2500m) on Saturday and appears to be peaking at the right time. Signoff has well backed and has magic man Joao Moreira on board who will be carrying just 51kg.

This year there are 13 internationally trained gallopers including seven who have had their last start outside of Australia. Of those, the Irish galloper Mutual Regard appears to have the best credentials. The lightly raced stayer was a strong winner last start and has a great 3200m record.

Godolphin galloper Cavalryman is another with a strong chance whilst Red Cadeaux is lining up for his fourth tilt at a Melbourne Cup after narrowly missing out behind Dunaden in 2011 and Fiorente last year.

The German-trained Protectionist is one international that has had a warm up run in Australia and looked very good when stepping out in the Herbert Power (2400m), grinding home to finish 4th. He will take benefit from that run and can figure in the finish.

High-profile All Blacks including captain Richie McCaw, Aaron Smith, Sam Whitelock and Owen Franks are all expected to be rested. 

Dan Carter is finally fit, but could be on the bench in favour of Aaron Cruden who will start his first match in the black jersey since hitting the bottle too hard and missing a team meeting.

New Zealand first played the USA way back in 1913 in Berkeley, California. New Zealand won 51-3.   Their next meeting was an exhibition match in San Diego in 1980, won 53-6 by the Kiwis. The most recent Test match was at the 1991 Rugby World Cup in England where the ABs won 46-6. 

The USA has never scored a try against the All Blacks. All points in the three matches played to date have been penalties.

“We’re showcasing rugby in the states and our expectations are that we’ve gotta play well and put on something special to try and promote the game, particularly the All Black brand. The States are a big side, they’re certainly not lacking in size and pace and we’ll have to prepare well as we always do and go out and play well.”

Overview: Australia and New Zealand will battle it out in the 2nd game of the double header at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday the 25th of October 2014.

Australia defeated New Zealand in the 2013 RLWC Final and again in the mid-year ANZAC test in 2014. The Kangaroos will be looking to do the same in their first match of the tournament. The Kiwis will be looking to put their best possible team on the park for the Four Nations tournament. The Bookies will write the Kiwis off but taking on Australia first up will be the best time to spring an upset.

The Kangaroos have won the last eight trans Tasman meetings including a 30-18 victory in this year's Anzac Test. But only six players who wore the Kangaroos strip that night will be in action. The bookies are tipping a comfortable win for Australia and we're also sticking with the hosts despite their injury toll, but it'll be a close one. Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk are still there to lead the side around the park along with Daly Cherry-Evans. With the Wallabies licking their wounds from a somewhat unfortunate loss against Argentina a fortnight ago, and the All Blacks suffering their first defeat in over a year at the hands of the Springboks, either side will see the upcoming Bledisloe encounter as an opportunity for redemption.

Both sides have had some off-field drama too, causing some shifting and changes among the backs, but both the Wallabies and All Blacks have the fire-power to beat one another, it’s now just about who’s hungrier, but that said, there’s nothing quite like a determined All Black side.

In terms of the personnel changes, there are two changes to the starting Wallaby side that took on Argentina with Rob Simmons returning to lock after dealing with concussion, whilst Christian Lealiifano replaces Matt Toomua at inside centre who has also been dealing with concussion issues after 2 heavy knocks in recent games.

On the bench Quade Cooper returns to the Wallabies squad for the first time in 2014 and is part of of 5/3 split that includes Nic White and Rob Horne as part of the backs contingent.  James Horwill drops back to the bench after starting against Argentina and joins Josh Mann-Rea, Benn Robinson, Ben Alexander and Matt Hodgson in the forwards.

A milestone for the Wallabies will see Adam Ashley-Cooper reach his 100th cap for his country. Ashley-Cooper will join five other Wallabies players that have reached the 100 Test mark – George Gregan, Nathan Sharpe, George Smith, Stephen Larkham and David Campese.

As for the All Blacks,  Lock Brodie Retallick has recovered from injury and will start against in the No. 4 jersey.

Retallick returns after missing the Rugby Championship finale against the Springboks. Steve Hansen has also promoted Wyatt Crockett and Dane Coles to start in the front-row once again.

Liam Messam comes in for Jerome Kaino on the blindside flank, while winger Cory Jane starts ahead of Ben Smith, who has been excluded to rest. Charles Piutau fills the void and will likely get a chance off the bench.

Flyhalf Aaron Cruden, who missed the last two games of the Rugby Championship due to suspension, has not been included in the match 23.

Argentina suffered a 34-13 loss to New Zealand in La Plata. The Pumas are yet to register a win this campaign and are still looking for their first ever Rugby Championship victory. 

The Wallabies led 10-8 after 70 minutes but conceded three late tries to suffer a 28-10 loss to South Africa in Cape Town. It was their third loss of the campaign.

Argentina have made five changes to their starting line-up. Veteran back-rowers Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe (birth of his child) and Jean Manuel Leguizamon (calf) are unavailable, with Benjamin Macome in for Lobbe and Rodrigo Baez to start at blindside flanker. Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro starts at tighthead prop while lock Tomas Lavanini is back from a one-game ban. Scrum-half Martin Landajo has reclaimed his starting prop while outside centre Horacio Agulla has been promoted. The Pumas are in last spot on three points but were competitive in both games against South Africa and in last month's 32-25 loss to the Wallabies on the Gold Coast. 

The Wallabies have made two changes to their starting line-up and several changes on the bench including the axing of Kurtley Beale. The controversial Waratahs star remains with the touring party but has been stood down after a verbal stoush with a female ARU staff member during a flight from Johannesburg to Sao Paulo on Wednesday. Lock Rob Simmons (concussion) has been ruled out, with James Horwill to start. Ben McCalman is out with a shoulder injury which sees Scott Higginbotham earn his first Test start since December, 2012. Inside-centre Matt Toomua passed a concussion test and is free to play. The Wallabies have won two and lost three this tournament to sit third on the ladder in 10 points heading into the final round.

The Wallabies are still favourites with the bookies despite their late collapse against South Africa and the latest drama surrounding Kurtley Beale. But while they are still expected to win, this shapes as a defining moment of Ewen McKenzie's coaching reign. The coach has taken a firm stance by dumping Beale from the match-day squad and the latest off-field incident is undoubtedly an unwanted distraction. Another loss this week would be a major blow to morale and how the Wallabies bounce back from their Cape Town disaster will say a lot about how they're really travelling 11 months out from the 2015 World Cup. The All Blacks secured The Rugby Championship’s trophy with a 34-13 win over Argentina in La Plata. The Pumas have been unable to win a game in the championship to date. New Zealand were missing two key players in Dane Coles and Aaron Cruden, but the team relied on their strong structure and discipline to win the game and the championship with one match to go.

South Africa will be missing two key players due to injury. Number 8 Duane Vermeulen suffered rib cartilage damage in the game against Australia and is likely out of the next game. This is not good news for the Boks, losing one of their key “crunch” men – Vermeulen has developed a reputation for throwing himself in to tackles and halting the opposition’s offence. Springbok speedster and number 8, Bryan Habana, might also be out from a head-knock in the previous game.  

The match will also be de Villiers 50th game for South Africa in the Rugby Championship. 

Dane Coles has rejoined his teammates after the birth of his son. The All Blacks are currently ahead of every other country in IRB standings. The game against Argentina pulled New Zealand to a 4.48-point lead over South Africa, while Australia and England are 3rd and 4th respectively.  

This game might be the closest the world champions will come to facing a defeat. For the All Blacks to equal their record and to retain the status of the most clinical and efficient team on the field, they will need to face the grit of a home side Springboks team. We predict a very close win to the All Blacks by three points.

The 2014 season draws to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday evening when fairytale team South Sydney and the resurgent Canterbury square off at what will be a rocking ANZ Stadium. The Bunnies go in the biggest premiership favourites in nearly two decades but carry the weight of a 43-year premiership drought while the Bulldogs head into the decider sans expectation and with a sense of destiny about their finals charge.

South Sydney have won more premierships than any other side with 20 but have not played in a Grand Final since 1971. Since then Canterbury have reached 12 deciders, winning six to take their all-time tally to eight. The Rabbitohs and Bulldogs have met just three times in finals football with Canterbury winning the 2012 preliminary final and the 1986 major preliminary semi after Souths won the famous 1967 Grand Final 12-10 on the back of Bob McCarthy’s famous intercept try. Overall Canterbury hold a 78-67-4 advantage on South Sydney but the Rabbitohs have won three of the last four clashes since the ’12 preliminary final. The Bulldogs are 13-6 all-time against the Bunnies at ANZ. Canterbury won 15-14 when the teams met in Round 7 before the Rabbitohs came from behind to win 21-14 in Round 25.

South Sydney hit the Grand Final in exceptional form. After finishing the season ranked third on the ladder but finishing with the top defence and the second rated attack, the Bunnies led Manly 40-0 before winning 40-24 and then led the Roosters 32-12 before sealing a 32-22 win in their two finals matches. The Rabbitohs have won four of their last five matches at ANZ and five of their last seven against Top 8 opposition though they have conceded 22-plus in four of their last five. Canterbury stumbled into the finals, finishing seventh with just two wins in their final eight regular season games that saw them rank fifth in defence but a lowly 13th in attack. They struck form in September though with a blistering win over Melbourne followed by grinding victories over Manly and Penrith. They have scored just two second half tries in their last eight appearances.

Coming up against Australia last round, Argentina continued what has become a familiar story for them since joining the Rugby Championship - they were good, but not quite good enough. They maintained a respectable score line going down 32-25, but still they remain without a win since joining the competition.

Heading back to Argentina may provide the Pumas with some added enthusiasm to finally claim that elusive win, but they’ll be playing host to a side who, regardless of where the two sides play, they have never beaten.

The All Blacks enter this game having not lost in their last 21 tests, but that record was on very shaky ground late in their clash against the Springboks last round as they held out for a 14-10 victory. Though the All Blacks could muster just one try against South Africa, this was testament to some stout Springbok defence.

The All Blacks amassed 611 metres with the ball in hand compared to the Springboks 282. They 61% possession and territory, made seven linebreaks, 31 defenders beaten and outnumbered the Springboks for offloads 16-1. Are the Pumas capable of withstanding such an onslaught the way the Springboks did? I don’t believe so.

Much of the lead into this game has focused more on the dropping of fly-half Aaron Cruden rather than the game itself. Failing to make the team flight after a late night drinking session, Cruden will not be making an appearance for the All Blacks in the test matches against Argentina or South African.

Without question Cruden is a classy player, but due to the wealth of talent that the All Blacks possess, the usual cliches about how there star fly-half can’t be replaced do not apply, with a more than ample deputy lurking in the wings in Beauden Barrett.

The 23-year-old has quickly amassed 23 tests, though started just three, and has spent a lot of time in the uncustomary position at fullback. He’s now been afforded a great opportunity to stake his claim as the top number ten in the country. Don’t be lured in by the thought that the All Blacks may be weakened here, Barrett has a full tool shed that he’s very competent in using.

Since joining the Rugby Championship, the Pumas have teased with gritty challenges on the road offering a glimmer of hope of what they could potentially do once they get back to Argentina, only to ultimately prove to be a let down in front of their home crowd.

Since the introduction of the Rugby Championship, the All Blacks trips to Argentina have resulted in victories of 39 and 18. The Pumas have covered a 15.5-point line just once against the All Blacks going back to 2012 when they joined the SANZAR side’s competition, and even that was a 15 point loss.

The All Blacks have proven at this point that they have little regard for whether this game takes place in Argentina or New Zealand, they’re a far superior side, and they make it obvious. Despite the All Blacks being forced to make a few adjustments to their side, I don’t see this one playing out any differently.
