After 26 rounds of the regular season finals footy is finally upon us and haven't we got a belter of a game to kick off the action this Friday night with the Sea Eagles taking on the Rabbitohs.

These two sides have around half a century of storied rivalries but the two clubs also have recent history that you can count on being in the back of their minds come kick-off on Friday night.

The Rabbitohs were left reeling in last year's preliminary final when the Sea Eagles overcame a 14-0 deficit after 30 minutes to ultimately prevail comfortably 30-20 at the final siren. The defeat meant Souths had fallen at the final hurdle for the second successive season, and they club have no doubt been plotting their journey back to the final weekends of September ever since.

However, as much as Manly fans and players will remind their South Sydney counterparts of last year's memorable triumph, the reality of the situation is that the Sea Eagles appear to be a club on a rapid downward spiral at the present time.

Manly have limped into the finals on the back of three defeats in their last five matches, while their two wins in that stretch came with last minute victories over the struggling Titans and fellow top four occupants Penrith.

It is no secret that their is significant player unrest at the Sea Eagles, however the club traditionally play their best football when their backs are against the wall and where they can unite as one of the field to prove critics and naysayers wrong.

Ironically, it was their Round 22 clash against the Rabbitohs that sent the club into their initial stages of free-fall, after the Bunnies clinically disposed of a disjointed Manly outfit 23-4 at the SCG.

Since then both clubs have been questioned in regards to their premiership winning ability and both sides also come into this encounter on the back of confidence-sapping last start defeats.

That will change for one team however, with the winner advancing straight to within one game of the Grand Final, while the loser will be sent further towards rugby league oblivion for 2014 and a sudden death semi-final next week.
